National Digital Channels - Platform and Integration Strategy

Introduction and purpose

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)’s A plan for digital health and social care sets out a vision and roadmap for a health and social care system that will be faster, more effective and deliver more personalised care. It takes forward what we have learned from the pandemic, and from tech pioneers across the world.

This National Digital Channels Platform and Integration Strategy supports the delivery of this plan. It is a foundation to allow our health system to work together to innovate at scale and deliver digital transformation which allows a person’s digital experience to be consistent, trusted and secure.

This strategy brings together different services and capabilities provided by our national digital channels (NHS website and NHS App, underpinned by the NHS login service) as a single technology offer. It allows the health and care system, supplier market and content providers to consume services and content, as well as make the best use of the platform's reach and capabilities.

By sharing our future direction with the system and suppliers, the intention is to create a vibrant and mutually beneficial digital ecosystem to deliver joined up and personalised health journeys for people.

The aim of this strategy is to:
  • be more open, collaborative and efficient across all of our digital channels
  • reduce duplication of services delivered at both national and local level
  • allow clearer planning for our partners and third parties who work with them
  • support other teams (internal, suppliers and external partners) to quickly develop new services and experiences
The intended benefit of this strategy is to:
  • give patients access to quicker and more effective care and reduce demand on frontline services
  • save the health and care system time and money
