General practice appointments data collection in support of winter pressures Directions 2017

Directions given by NHS England requiring NHS Digital to establish and operate a system for the collection of information to be known as the general practice appointments data collection in support of winter pressures information system.

Purpose

To improve understanding of appointments capacity and utilisation in general practice and inform more effective planning and management of capacity at local and regional levels.

Legal basis

Sections 254(1), (3) and (6) of the Health and Social Care Act 2012.

The Directions came into force on 1 November 2017.

GP appointments data collection in support of winter pressures

This is a weekly, automatic collection of anonymised data from general practice appointment systems. It is used to measure capacity and utilisation in general practice, allowing healthcare managers and commissioners to plan and manage services more effectively.
