Workforce

An individual's ethnic group, disability, religious belief, sexual orientation and marital status description is self-determined.

Protected characteristic information, excluding marital status, is sourced from the Electronic Staff Record Data Warehouse.

Percentages as displayed may not appear to sum correctly due to rounding.

Marital status information is sourced from Operational ESR and then matched to data from the ESR Data Warehouse. Due to this, full matching of the data may not be possible.

Staff who have declined to provide a specific ethnic category have been categorised as "Not Stated” and staff for whom no ethnic category information has been provided have been categorised as "Unknown".

Staff who have declined to comment on their disability status are shown as 'Not Disclosed' and staff for whom no disability status is stated have been categorised as 'Unknown'.

Staff whom have provided a response but declined to comment on their specific religious belief are shown as 'I do not wish to disclose my religion/belief' and staff for whom no religious belief information has been provided have been categorised as 'Unknown'.

Staff who have provided a response but declined to comment on their specific sexual orientation are shown as 'I do not wish to disclose my sexual orientation' and staff for whom no sexual orientation information has been provided have been categorised as 'Unknown'.

Staff who have provided a response but declined to comment on their specific marital status are shown as 'Unknown' and staff records which could not be matched to the marital status information have been categorised as 'Undefined'.

Professional group information is sourced from Operational ESR and then matched to data from the ESR Data Warehouse. Due to this, full matching of the data may not be possible.

Staff are defined as full time if they have a contracted FTE of 1 or over. Staff are defined as part time if they have a contracted FTE of less than 1.

Gender pay gap

Figures to report the gender pay gap reporting for 2017/18 have been taken from Operational ESR. Therefore, this report is not directly comparable with figures published in the 2016/17 Equality and Diversity workforce report.

For bonus pay gap ONLY: Figures for the number of male and female staff have been sourced from the Electronic Staff Record Data Warehouse. These are as at 31 March 2018.

Employee relations

Due to small numbers of cases being recorded, this data relates to the number of employees with a recorded employee relations case between 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2018, therefore covering a period of two years.

Staff whom have declined to provide a specific ethnic category have been categorised as "Not Stated” and staff for whom no ethnic category information has been provided have been categorised as "Unknown".

Staff whom have declined to comment on their disability status are shown as 'Not Declared' and staff for whom no disability status is stated have been categorised as 'Unknown'.

Staff whom have provided a response but declined to comment on their specific religious belief are shown as 'I do not wish to disclose my religion/belief' and staff for whom no religious belief information has been provided have been categorised as 'Unknown'.

Staff whom have provided a response but declined to comment on their specific sexual orientation are shown as 'Not Declared' and staff for whom no sexual orientation information has been provided have been categorised as 'Unknown'.

Staff whom have provided a response but declined to comment on their specific marital status are shown as 'Unknown' and staff records which could not be matched to the marital status information have been categorised as Undefined'.

Categories included in this data are not consistent with those elsewhere in this report, due to differences in data capture through Jobtrain.

Jobtrain was introduced by NHS Digital at the end of April 2017, so there will potentially be incomplete data for those individuals who were appointed between April and August 2017. This is reflected in the reduced numbers in this analysis.

At launch, there was an issue with one of the Jobtrain application forms, which meant that some protected characteristics questions were not mandatory, so there are a larger than expected number of blank (Unknown) records. This is most noticeable in the marital status information. It hasn't been possible to correct the omissions, but the issue has been fixed for future data capture.

Promotions

The promotions included in this report cover the period from 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018.

The promotions data has been sourced from the Operational Electronic Staff Record (ESR). This has then been matched to data taken from the ESR data warehouse, as at 31 March 2018.

Due to the differing data sources, full matching on the data has not been possible. Records without protected characteristic information in March 2018 have been classified as 'Unmatched'.

Staff who declined to provide a specific ethnic category have been categorised as 'Not Stated'.

Staff who declined to comment on their disability status are shown as 'Not Disclosed', and staff who provided no disability status have been categorised as 'Unknown'.

Staff who provided a response but declined to comment on their specific marital status are shown as 'Unknown', and staff records which could not be matched to the marital status information have been categorised as 'Undefined'.

The source for promotions data was the NHS Digital Operational ESR.

Census

All data relates to persons usually resident in England for all ages (unless otherwise stated).

Protected characteristic information was collected differently, using slightly different categories, as part of the 2011 ONS Population Census. Therefore, it is not possible to directly compare the data from the 2011 ONS Population Census with the data provided for NHS Digital. Where possible NHS Digital has selected or combined categories to provide the most suitable comparison, with key differences detailed below.

The 2011 ONS Population Census did not contain a binary question as to whether an individual regarded themselves as disabled or not, rather the question was related to the limitation of a person's day to day activities. A long-term health problem or disability that limits a person's day-to-day activities, and has lasted, or is expected to last, at least 12 months. This includes problems that are related to old age. People were asked to assess whether their daily activities were limited a lot or a little by such a health problem, or whether their daily activities were not limited at all.

The voluntary question on religion in the 2011 Census was intended to capture people's religious affiliation and identification at the time of the Census irrespective of whether they practised or believed in that religion or how important it was in their lives. If a person had no religion, then the first of a series of tick boxes could be selected. Care should be taken when using these data not to infer, or allow the inference by others, that the practice of a religion or specific religious activities that are expected of believers has been measured. Unlike other census questions where missing answers are imputed, this question was voluntary, and where no answer was provided the response is categorised as 'not stated'.

The 2011 ONS Population Census does not include any information regarding Sexual Identity or Orientation, and therefore no comparison has been provided.
