Health and Justice Information Services

Health and Justice Information Services provides a total healthcare system for people within the Justice System.

The Health and Justice Information Service

The Health and Justice Information Services (HJIS) is an IT system for the English Health and Justice Service. Patients may be in the justice system in England in the following places:

  • prison

  • young offender institutes

  • immigration removal centres

  • secure training centres

  • secure children's homes

Benefits of the new HJIS contract are:

  • patient records can be transferred between health and justice organisations

  • records can be passed back to community NHS services when leaving the Justice system

  • patients can register with a Justice healthcare team as their registered GP services for continuity of care

  • access to NHS Spine services such as Personal Demographics Service (PDS), Electronic Prescription Service (EPS), e-Referral Service (e-RS)

Programme Ownership

The ownership of the Health and Justice Information Services is with NHS England.

Our role has primarily been the procurement of a replacement solution following the expiry of the original contract and, in future, will provide solution assurance services for each release.

North of England commissioning support (NECS) is responsible for delivery of the programme, including implementation of new system functionality.
