Pharmacy costs and benefits study: key points for community pharmacy teams

Details of the outcome of an independent review of the costs, systems and usage of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) in community pharmacy, which was conducted by PwC are now available.

The Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC), NHS England and NHS Employers worked with NHS Digital, to support the design of the independent study which was undertaken by PwC. Their work included visits to pharmacies across England, which included time and motion studies and interviews with pharmacy team members. PwC also collected feedback on EPS from pharmacy contractors and their teams via an online survey.

The study found that community pharmacy teams who have updated their dispensing processes to take into account the different actions required for electronic prescriptions are benefitting most from EPS. 

From PwC's findings, NHS Digital and PSNC have identified key points for pharmacy contractors and their teams, including those which may help them make better use of EPS. PSNC have compiled two briefing notes which identify ways to make their EPS processes more efficient:
