Summary
This annual report presents results from the monitoring of the NHS Stop Smoking Services in England during the period April 2015 to March 2016. NHS Stop Smoking Services offer support to help people quit smoking. This can include intensive support through group therapy or one-to-one support. The support is designed to be widely accessible within the local community and is provided by trained personnel, such as specialist smoking cessation advisors and trained nurses and pharmacists.
This report includes information on the number of people setting a quit date and the number who successfully quit at the 4 week follow-up. It also presents in depth analyses of the key measures of the service including pregnant women, breakdowns by ethnic group and type of pharmacotherapy received. The results are provided at national, regional and local authority levels.
This publication also includes an updated version of the 'Interactive data and charts' allowing for comparison of regional and local authority data against national data and comparison of regional and local authority for number and percentage of successful quitters; those who had not quit; those whose outcome was not known or lost to follow up and successful quitters CO validated.
Highlights
- The number of people setting a quit date through NHS Stop Smoking Services in 2015-16 fell for the fourth consecutive year to 382,500. This represents a decrease of 15 per cent on 2014-15 and 37 per cent on 2005-06.
- The number of people who successfully quit (self-reported) also fell for the fourth consecutive year to 195,170. This was a decrease of 15 per cent on 2014-15 although the success quit rate remained similar at 51 per cent.
- 71 per cent (139,287) of successful quitters (self-reported) had their results confirmed by Carbon Monoxide (CO) verification in 2015-16. This is an increase in the proportion who had their results confirmed by CO verification of 2 percentage points from 2014-15.
Error notification:
On the 02/09/2016 table 5.2 was corrected. Previously the data quality indicators for "Records where outcome was not known / lost to follow up" and "Records where pharmacotherapy was not known" were incorrect. The average change across all LAs was 2.6 percentage points and 0.4 percentage points respectively. The text in the report which comments on these indicators on pages 17 and 18 has also been corrected. NHS Digital apologises for any inconvenience caused.
