Summary

The number of written complaints on NHS services made by patients, or their representatives, was collected from all NHS organisations for the period 1 April 2004 and 31 March 2005.

In previous years, information was also collected on the number of requests for complaints to be independently reviewed. From August 2004 the responsibility for this review passed from the trusts to the Health Care Commission, who now hold the data on this area.

Highlights

There were 90,413 written complaints about hospital and community services in 2004/2005, compared with 90,122 in 2003/04. Of these 74.7% were concluded within 20 working days, compared with 69.1% in the previous year.

For family health services, there were 43,407 written complaints received in a practice/surgery, compared to 43,347 in 2003/04.
