Statement: Use of data by former North West Public Health Observatory and Beacon Dodsworth

March 04, 2014

In relation to current media interest in data analysis by Beacon Dodsworth, we would like to clarify the following:

The former North West Public Health Observatory (NW PHO) held a contract with the predecessor body to the Health and Social Care Information Centre (also known as the NHS Information Centre) to receive record level data for use by NHS organisations and local authorities working with NHS organisations for uses in accordance with the purposes of a public health observatory.

We would like to make clear that information given to Beacon Dodsworth by NW PHO was anonymous, aggregate level analysis, which was used to look at disease prevalence in different communities. No record level data was shared with Beacon Dodsworth, nor was any of this information sensitive or at patient level.
