Estates Return Information Collection (ERIC)

Data Provision Notice to require the submission of estates expenditure information from all NHS trusts (including ambulance trusts).

Overview

The aim of the Estates Return Information Collection (ERIC) is to provide accountability to Parliament, the government, and the public on NHS expenditure to provide, maintain and service the physical NHS estate which supports the delivery of healthcare. All data collected are published as aggregate national figures on the NHS England website. Data at trust, site, and Private Finance Initiative (PFI) scheme level are also published, which allows scrutiny of NHS trusts’ performance in these areas.

Scope of the collection

This Notice is served on:

  • all NHS trusts (including ambulance trusts) in England

Legal basis for provision of data

Period of the collection

The collection is undertaken annually in respect of the financial year that has just concluded (for example, the collection commencing 1 April 2026 is for the 2025/26 financial year).

For all ERIC collections the timetable is as follows:

  • data submission and early validation of critical data fields: April to June
  • enhanced data validation: July to August
  • data validation and preparation of publication materials: August to September
  • publication: data are anticipated to be published in October of each year

In line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics, NHS England aims to keep the period between collection and publication as short as possible, but a significant validation exercise must be undertaken before data can be deemed suitable for release.
